The right pad is a mouse-like joystick and the grips allows easier access to game features without having to hold the controller in a weird way (the claw). The left grip is bound to "B" so that you can sprint and look around with the right pad at the same time while the right grip modeshifts the right pad to act as the d-pad, this allows you to switch your equipment while running.
